Tilt is the state in which the goal silently changes from executing a plan to recovering a loss. It is almost never announced. It shows up as small deviations: entering slightly early, sizing slightly bigger, taking a setup that is nearly valid, moving a stop for the first time in weeks. Each is defensible alone, and together they are the mechanism by which a −1R day becomes a −8R day.

The physiology is real. A meaningful loss produces a measurable stress response — narrowed attention, shortened time horizon, higher risk appetite in an attempt to restore the previous state. You are not weak for experiencing it; you are a mammal. What you can control is whether decisions get made while it is happening.

So build circuit breakers that do not require judgement in the moment, because judgement is exactly what is impaired. A daily loss limit that closes the platform at −2R. A mandatory twenty-minute break after any loss. A hard rule that the second consecutive loss ends the session. These feel excessive when you are calm, which is precisely when they must be written.

Noticing your tell is the last cheap moment before the expensive part starts.

Learn your own tells. For most traders there are two or three reliable ones: checking a position more often than the timeframe justifies, calculating what a bigger size would have returned, opening a chart you do not trade, or arguing with the market in your head. Write yours down. Noticing a tell is the last cheap moment before the expensive part starts.

And separate the loss from the story. A stop being hit means the market did not do what you thought — it is not a verdict on your intelligence, and the market has no idea you exist. Traders who last are not the ones who never tilt; they are the ones who have arranged their session so that tilt costs one small trade instead of a month.

Điểm chính

Tilt changes your goal from executing to recovering, and it arrives as small deviations. Pre-commit to daily loss limits and forced breaks while calm, because judgement is impaired in the moment.
